Setting it up in WooCommerce

Six steps in your own settings, about five minutes. No plugin to install.

If you are not the person who looks after your website

Forward this page to whoever is. It takes about five minutes and there is nothing to install.

Two of the decisions are yours rather than theirs, so tell them before they start: what time you will tell customers and what you will charge. Both are below.

Before you start

1

Open your shipping zones

In WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce, then Settings, then the Shipping tab. You will see Shipping zones. Click Add zone.

2

Name it and set the region

Zone name Same-day delivery

For Zone regions, choose Ireland.

Where this zone sits matters. WooCommerce works down the list and a customer matches only one zone. If you already have a zone covering all of Ireland, drag this one above it, or the same-day option will never appear.

3

Limit it to the areas we cover

Click Limit to specific ZIP/postcodes under the region box. Paste the list below. One per line, not separated by commas.

That is every Dublin district plus Blackrock, Dún Laoghaire, Swords, Malahide and Lucan. Twenty-five in all, and the same list our own system checks against.

The asterisks matter. They tell WooCommerce to match every Eircode beginning with those three characters. Without them it looks for one exact address.

4

Add the delivery method

Click Add shipping method and choose Flat rate. Then open its settings.

Method title Same-day delivery — order by 1pm
Cost 14.99

The title is what your customer sees at the checkout, so it is worth using it to carry the cut-off. The cost is yours to set.

5

Save

Click Save changes. It is live immediately.

6

Ring us once it is live

Ring 01 425 5722. We add your shop to the 2pm collection round and send you the link your staff use to book each delivery.

Nothing will actually be collected until you have done this, so do not skip it.

One thing WooCommerce will not do for you

There is no cut-off setting, so the option shows at every hour of the day. Somebody ordering at five in the afternoon will still see it. That is why the cut-off belongs in the method title, where they cannot miss it.

An order after 1pm is not a lost order either. It would not be collected by a standard carrier until the next day anyway, so on hop it still reaches the customer sooner.

Check it worked

  1. Go to your own shop as a customer would and put anything in the basket.
  2. Go to the checkout and enter a Dublin address. Your new same-day option should be in the list of delivery choices.
  3. Now change it to a Bray address, which starts A98, or anywhere in Cork. The same-day option should disappear and your usual options should be all that is left.
Later: letting your store send us the orders

Everything above is all a shop needs to start. Once you are booking enough that typing each order is a nuisance, your store can send them to us by itself.

That part is a job for whoever looks after the website, and there is no hurry. Ring us when you are ready and we will walk you through it.

If you get stuck

Ring 01 425 5722 and we will walk you through it on the phone. It takes about three minutes and we would far rather do that than have you spend twenty minutes on it.
