Setting up local delivery in Shopify

Seven steps in your own settings, about five minutes. No app to install, nothing to pay Shopify.

If you are not the person who looks after your website

Forward this page to whoever is. It is written so they can do the whole thing without ringing us, and it takes about five minutes.

Two of the decisions are yours rather than theirs, though, so tell them before they start: what time you will tell customers and what you will charge. Both are below.

Before you start

1

Open your delivery settings

Sign in to Shopify. At the very bottom of the menu down the left-hand side, click Settings. Then in the list that appears, click Shipping and delivery.

2

Find Local delivery, further down the page

Scroll past the shipping rates at the top. Lower down there is a section called Local delivery, with your shop listed under it. Click Manage beside your shop.

Careful here. The shipping rates section at the top of the page looks similar and is not the one you want. Local delivery is a separate section further down.

3

Turn it on and set the area

Switch local delivery on. Then choose to set the area by postcode rather than by distance. A circle takes in places we do not reach and leaves out places we do, so the list is what matches where our riders actually go.

Copy the whole line below and paste it in.

Paste this list D01*, D02*, D03*, D04*, D05*, D06*, D6W*, D07*, D08*, D09*, D10*, D11*, D12*, D13*, D14*, D15*, D16*, D17*, D18*, D20*, D22*, D24*, A94*, A96*, K36*, K67*, K78*

That is every Dublin district plus Blackrock, Dún Laoghaire, Swords, Malahide and Lucan. Twenty-seven in all, and the same list our own system checks against, so your checkout and our riders agree.

The asterisks matter. They tell Shopify to match every Eircode beginning with those three characters. Without them it looks for one exact address.

4

Put in your price

Enter what you are charging the customer. Leave any minimum order field empty unless you want one.

Delivery price 14.99
5

Write the wording in Delivery information

Shopify will not let you rename the option itself, so your customer sees the words Local delivery whatever you do. What you can write is the Delivery information field, which shows at the checkout and again in the order confirmation email.

It has to be true at any hour of the day, because this option shows at every hour. The wording below answers both cases, so nobody reaching your checkout at five in the afternoon can be surprised by what they get.

Copy this in Ordered before 1pm? It arrives today. After 1pm? It arrives tomorrow, still ahead of standard delivery. Dublin addresses only. You will get a text with a delivery window once it is on its way.

Because the option is only called Local delivery, it is worth putting the same sentence on your own delivery information page too, so somebody deciding whether to buy can find it before they reach the checkout.

An order after 1pm is not a lost order. An order at five on a Monday evening would not be collected by a standard carrier until Tuesday, so the customer would see it Wednesday at the earliest. On hop it reaches them on Tuesday. The worst we do is still better than the best they would otherwise get.

6

Save

Click Save. It is live immediately. There is nothing to publish and nothing to wait for.

7

Ring us once it is live

Ring 01 425 5722. We add your shop to the 2pm collection round and send you the link your staff use to book each delivery.

Nothing will actually be collected until you have done this, so do not skip it.

One thing to know before you switch it on

Shopify’s local delivery does not work with Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or Amazon Pay. It works with Shop Pay and with ordinary card payment. If a customer taps one of those express buttons at the start of the checkout, same-day will not appear for them at all.

Worth knowing rather than worth worrying about: a customer who wants same-day and does not see it can go back and pay by card. But if most of your orders come through Apple Pay on a phone, tell us and we will look at it with you.

Two smaller ones. A customer cannot mix posted items and same-day items in one order, so they would place two. And the delivery address has to be one Google recognises, which is almost always fine in Dublin.

Check it worked

  1. Go to your own shop as a customer would and put anything in the basket.
  2. Go to the checkout and enter a Dublin address. Your new same-day option should be in the list of delivery choices.
  3. Now change it to a Bray address, which starts A98, or anywhere in Cork. The same-day option should disappear and your usual options should be all that is left.
Later: letting Shopify send us the orders

Everything above is all a shop needs to start. Once you are booking enough that typing each order is a nuisance, Shopify can send them to us by itself and we write the tracking number back onto the order.

That part is a job for whoever looks after the website, and the instructions are separate: cyclone.ie/connected. There is no hurry, and we will walk you through it when you are ready.

If you get stuck

Ring 01 425 5722 and we will walk you through it on the phone. It takes about three minutes and we would far rather do that than have you spend twenty minutes on it.

Shopify changes the layout of its admin from time to time, so a menu may sit in a slightly different place than described here. The steps themselves stay the same.
